Broken glass does not always mean you need a completely new sliding door. When the frame and panel are otherwise serviceable, the glass or insulated glass unit can often be replaced while the existing door remains in place.
Delta Sliding Doors handles sliding-door glass replacement throughout Jacksonville and Northeast Florida. We work with cracked and shattered panels, failed insulated glass units, fogging between panes, and door systems that require appropriate safety or impact-rated glazing.
Cracked, shattered, and fogged glass are different problems
A crack or shattered panel is a physical glass failure. Fogging between panes is usually a sealed-unit failure. Those problems look different and require different replacement approaches.
If moisture is trapped between two panes and cannot be wiped from either exposed surface, the seal around the insulated glass unit has likely failed. Cleaning the inside or outside of the door will not remove moisture that is between the panes.
A broken single pane or laminated assembly has a different construction. The panel must be identified before new glass is ordered.
Safety glass, tempered glass, and impact glazing
Sliding-door glazing can involve different safety and performance requirements depending on the system. Tempered safety glass is common in patio doors, while impact-rated systems may use laminated constructions and tested assemblies designed for wind-borne-debris resistance.
We avoid treating “tempered” and “impact” as interchangeable terms. An impact-rated door is a complete system involving the glass, frame, anchors, hardware, and tested assembly. Replacing glass in that kind of system requires compatible materials and attention to the original construction.
That is why we do not recommend ordering replacement glass based only on a rough measurement from the visible opening.
How we identify the replacement glass
We inspect the door and determine how the panel is glazed. Depending on the system, important factors can include:
- overall glass dimensions;
- thickness;
- single-pane or insulated construction;
- spacer and seal details;
- tempered or laminated safety glazing;
- impact-system requirements;
- tint or low-E characteristics when relevant;
- frame and glazing-retainer condition;
- whether the moving panel itself is square and serviceable.
Etching or labels on the glass can also provide useful information.
We inspect the moving panel too
A glass problem can exist at the same time as a roller or frame problem. If the panel has been dragging because of worn rollers, installing new glass without correcting the movement leaves the door difficult to operate.
Likewise, a badly damaged frame can affect how the replacement glass is retained and how the panel sits in the opening.
We prefer to evaluate the complete panel before deciding the scope of work.
Foggy insulated glass units
A fogged unit is usually not repaired by drilling the glass or adding a temporary “defogging” treatment. If the perimeter seal has failed, the durable solution is generally to replace the insulated glass unit with a compatible new unit.
The existing aluminum or vinyl panel may still be reusable if it is in good condition.
Coastal and impact-door considerations
Northeast Florida has a wide mix of sliding-door systems. Homes near Ponte Vedra Beach, Jacksonville Beach, and St. Augustine may have large impact-rated doors or glazing selected for coastal construction.
Those systems can be heavier and more specialized than older patio doors. The correct replacement glass has to match the door's construction rather than simply filling the opening.
What happens during glass replacement
Once the correct glass is identified and available, the panel is prepared for safe removal of the failed glass. Glazing retainers, gaskets, setting materials, and frame condition are evaluated as part of the process.
The new glass is installed according to the panel's construction. The panel is then reassembled and checked for fit, movement, and alignment.
Because large glass panels can be heavy and broken safety glass can be unpredictable, this is not a good project to improvise without the proper handling equipment.
When replacing the complete door makes more sense
Glass replacement is attractive when the frame and panel are still sound. Complete sliding door installation may make more sense when the frame is badly damaged, the opening has chronic issues, the door no longer meets the homeowner's needs, or a major upgrade is planned.
We separate those decisions. A failed glass unit by itself is not a reason to sell a complete new door.
Frequently asked questions
Can you replace the glass without replacing the frame?
Often, yes, if the panel and frame are serviceable and compatible replacement glass can be produced.
Why is there fog between the panes?
The insulated glass seal has likely failed, allowing moisture into the space between panes.
Is every sliding-door panel tempered glass?
No blanket statement covers every sliding-door system. Safety-glazing requirements and impact systems can use different constructions. We identify the existing door and specify compatible replacement glazing.
Can you replace impact-rated glass?
We can evaluate impact-rated sliding-door systems and determine the correct compatible replacement approach. The complete system matters, not just the glass.
How do you price glass replacement?
We provide a free on-site estimate because dimensions, glass type, panel construction, and removal requirements affect the job.
Free on-site glass estimate
If your patio door glass is cracked, shattered, or fogged between the panes, Delta can inspect the panel and determine whether glass replacement is practical. We serve Jacksonville and the surrounding Northeast Florida service area.
Free on-site estimate
We inspect the door, explain what we find, and give you the price before any work begins.
